From the shores of Lake Annecy, embark on an adventure to discover one of the most beautiful gravel climb in the area. This route will take you to the Col de St-Eustache, and then you will cross the Bauges region through some low-traffic country roads. While there will be asphalt sections throughout this ride, you will encounter numerous small gravel sections, and most importantly, you will have the opportunity to climb the Col de Chérel, which is only accessible by gravel.
The Col de St-Eustache is located right at the beginning of the ride, allowing you to catch your breath on the flat terrain before tackling the gravel ascent of the Col de Chérel, which is approximately 48km from the starting point. If you get a little hungry, you can make a stop at the halfway point at the La Grenette à Pain bakery in Châtelard.
The ascent of the Col de Chérel begins from Précherel, a small hamlet that leads to the gravel track of the Col de Chérel. However, the route becomes steeper starting from Jarsy, resulting in a total ascent of 8km to reach the summit.
You will climb the first switchbacks through a forest before reaching an open passage with breathtaking views. The final kilometer follows a gently uphill shaded stretch, revealing a magnificent view of the surrounding peaks. You may even catch a glimpse of a part of Lake Annecy.
You’ve conquered the toughest part! The last 20 kilometers consist mainly of a descent on a rough road towards Chevaline, with a section on a cycle path to reach Le Bon Wagon. Take the time to admire the view!
Note: Be mindful of the ruts during the descent towards Chevaline.
If you arrive at Le Bon Wagon before 3 PM, you’ll have the opportunity to have a meal or enjoy a snack break there 🙂
