Physical & technical
Located only a few kilometers from Barcelona, and less than an hour from Girona, Riells del Fai is the start of a beautiful gravel route. It will take you on large gravel trails with 79% of off-roads.
You will pass by the Monastery of Sant Miquel del Fai. I recommend crossing the bridge and going down, before the official entrance, to see more of it! (there will be someone at the entrance of the bridge, but we asked and it was okay to ride our bike down. Just be careful with pedestrians.)
There are no single tracks but only two short sections where you will need to carry your bike. The rest of the route is very smooth, you will have a challenging climb a few kilometers after the monastery, with some bigger rocks, but I was able to ride it entirely without putting a foot on the ground.
The route will take you to Grau Mercader, on a large gravel trail near a cliff, with a beautiful view on the sea. You will probably cross path with some runners or hikers, this spot seemed to be famous in the area!
At kilometer 30, you will enter a Park Natural with many pastoral gates, they were no herds when I ride as we are in January but just be aware of this during spring/summer.
It’s overall a really nice route, rideable all year long! 🌞
